This week NRCAT released a statement calling for an impartial, nonpartisan, and independent "Commission of Inquiry" to investigate U.S.-sponsored torture policies and practices.
The statement, signed by 24 prominent religious leaders, was included in written testimony NRCAT submitted for a Senate Judiciary Committee's hearing on a Commission of Inquiry. here

Please help us in one or more of the following ways:
* Endorse the statement online right now. It would be good if we could gather a substantial number of endorsers in a week to reinforce our message to religious leaders and Members of Congress that there is strong and growing support within the religious community for this critical step in the campaign to end U.S.-sponsored torture once and for all.
* Forward this e-mail to friends, family and colleagues, asking them to endorse the statement.
* Send a form email to your Representative to urge him or her to co-sponsor a bill by Rep. John Conyers establishing a Commission of Inquiry.
* Print and copy this form letter to your Representative; have people in your congregation sign the letters and add personal statements; collect the signed letters and mail/deliver them to the district offices of your Representative.
* Print and copy and petition form and gather endorsements from people in your community. For a pdf version of the petition, click here.
The religious community made a difference in encouraging the President to halt torture; we now must urge Congress to create a Commission of Inquiry to help ensure that U.S.-sponsored torture never happens again. Building local support for a Commission of Inquiry now will strengthen both local and national advocacy efforts in the coming months.
Thank you for your commitment to ending U.S.-sponsored torture. We have much work to do together in 2009.
Sincerely,
Linda Gustitus, President
Richard Killmer, Executive Director
