RUMI: Why our children need us to fly

THE WAY WINGS SHOULD

What will
our children do in the morning?

Will they wake with their hearts wanting to play,
the way wings
should?

Will they have dreamed the needed flights and gathered
the strength from the planets that all men and women need to balance
the wonderful charms of
the earth

so that her power and beauty does not make us forget our own?

I know all about the ways of the heart - how it wants to be alive.

Love so needs to love
that it will endure almost anything, even abuse,
just to flicker for a moment. But the sky's mouth is kind,
its song will never hurt you, for I
sing those words.

What will our children do in the morning
if they do not see us
fly?

~ Rumi ~

  2. A beautiful poem by Rumi and it is always special when Rumi talks about love. There is a movie on life of Leo Tolstoy-THE LAST STATION. The film starts with a quote of flashing :
“Love is life, All everything that I understand, I understand only because I love. Everything is, everything exists, only because I love.”

  3. What a highlight in the midst of the dour and bitter to see your two beautiful responses. Yes, yes, yes to your special notations. As you emphasized, rlZ - we humans sometimes forget how much we NEED to love. Dar Sahib, I read a short story based on The Last Station which I must now read again. So vital to see how the greats like Tolstoy discovered this truth so completely - even while facing death. This is a theme among all intellectuals, artists and we more common folk (if there's such a thing?) ...

No matter what, we can love...we MUST love to show our children the way and also to hold one another up clear across this beautiful while sometimes crazy world...

Thank you both so much for coming by.

  4. So glad you saw this one as well - dear daughter. I made this with my children especially in mind and of course have exquisite memories of you in a swing. :)
