Guantánamo: What's Next? (with executive order)

President Obama has ordered that Guantánamo be shut down. But what’s next? What will we do with the 250 people who are at the prison?

HRF has been gearing up for this situation for years, reporting on the failed military commissions, working with prosecutors who say that the federal courts are up to the task of delivering justice in these cases, and producing a detailed blueprint on how the prison should be closed.

but there is still much work to be done.

Obama has taken a promising step in the right direction. But we need to keep up the pressure on the administration and Congress to make sure that the system of indefinite detention without trial is not imported to the United States or replicated elsewhere. The federal courts can handle these cases.

Help us send President Obama a message — thanking him for this historic step and urging him not to create another ad hoc system of justice or detention.
