ALEXANDRIA, VA. - A settlement in a civil suit against the government contractor once known as Blackwater has apparently fallen apart, but lawyers for the company say the deal should remain in place.
Dozens of Iraqi families sued the North Carolina-based company earlier this year, alleging that Blackwater employees engaged in indiscriminate killings and beatings of Iraqi civilians.
Over the weekend, both sides filed notice that the case had been settled. Terms were not disclosed.
But the plaintiffs' lawyer, Susan Burke, said the agreement was based on a conversation with clients that was mistakenly translated. She wants to have the lawsuit reinstated.
Lawyers for the company, now known as Xe, say a deal's a deal and want the settlement to stand.
